The
next day we woke up to the sound of macaques and other creatures. We went to
the lobby of the rainforest lodge (which you had to walk barefoot in) and had
are last breakfast. We then took the jetty back and made our way to the cave. The
Gamantong Cave is known for the bird nests for the famous bird nest soup. Some
of the birds nest can be sold for hundreds of dollars. We entered the cave and
were expecting a foul smell but it really wasn’t as bad as everyone made it out
to seem. There were also tons of cockroaches but they are just trying not to
get squashed. The cave was beautiful. Ally had thought the name and the looks
of the cave were similar and it turns out this exact cave is featured in one of
her favorite documentaries; Planet Earth. Next we headed to Sepilok to go to
the Orang Utan Rehabilitation Center. On the way we stopped for lunch and
walked around the city since the feeding for the Orang Utan was not till 3pm.
Driving on the back roads to the rehab center we saw a pack of wild boars which
for some reason I had been wanting to see. We were able to get one good
picture.
At the Rehab center we walked a path
to get to the main feeding area. We needed to be quiet to not scare off the
animals. Of course we were quiet but other tourists were not. Luckily, the
Orang Utans were used to having people come to visit them and they didn’t mind
the talking. We saw probably 8 to 10 different Orang Utans including a mom and
her baby.
Once we were done taking pictures we
left the center and headed to the local airport to return to Kota Kinabalu.
